Convert AVIF to ICO at 256×256 or any other size
The ICO format can store icons from 16×16 (small browser tab) to 256×256 (Windows 10/11 high-DPI). Instead of hunting for an AVIF that happens to be the right size, use the size presets here: the converter scales your image to 16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 180, 192 or 256 pixels — or type any custom size. A 256×256 AVIF to ICO conversion is the most common request because that is the largest size Windows and macOS recognize natively, and it is automatically downscaled into every smaller size inside the same .ico file.
AVIF browser support: a compatibility truth check
AVIF is the most modern image format here, and it comes with a catch: decoding it requires browser support. Chrome, Edge and Firefox have decoded AVIF since 2021–2022, and Safari joined in 2022 (Safari 16+). On older browsers — especially Safari 15 and below, or any webview that hasn't updated in years — the AVIF file simply cannot be opened, and this tool will tell you so instead of silently producing a broken icon. That honesty is why we also keep WebP, JPG and SVG converters: if a visitor can't decode your AVIF, your icon will fail on their machine. For maximum reach, convert from a more compatible source format instead.
Lossless and high-quality AVIF to ICO output
Many free converters visibly degrade icons, which matters at 16×16 where every pixel counts. One honest note: your source AVIF is already lossy — AV1 compression threw data away when the file was created. This tool then stores the decoded pixels as lossless PNG data inside the ICO, so no further quality is lost in the conversion itself. Three scaling levels are available: Lossless (PNG data inside the ICO), High (high-quality resampling for sharp edges), and Balanced (fastest). The quality setting also controls background handling: when your AVIF has no alpha channel, white-fill and keep-alpha modes give you predictable results on light or dark sites. After conversion, inspect the preview grid — you can judge legibility at every size before downloading.
Why is my icon blurry at 16×16?
Small sizes lose detail because the source image is downscaled. Best practice: start from a large, simple shape (a 256×256 icon with high contrast and bold shapes survives 16×16 best). The preview grid in the result panel lets you check this before you commit to the download.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free to convert AVIF to ICO?
Yes — completely free, with no limits, no registration and no watermark. This page has no paywall and no file-count restrictions for normal use.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device — you can even unplug your internet after opening the page and the tool still works.
Can I use the output as a website favicon?
Yes — that is the main use case. Choose the "Favicon set" mode to get favicon.ico, PNG icons at 16/32/180/192px, apple-touch-icon, site.webmanifest and the HTML code to paste into your site's head. Browsers request multiple sizes, so the full set gives the sharpest result everywhere.
What sizes should a favicon be?
Minimum you need: favicon.ico (16+32+48 inside one file), favicon-32x32.png and favicon-16x16.png. For best results on all platforms add apple-touch-icon.png (180×180), android-chrome-192x192.png and android-chrome-512x512.png. The favicon-set mode generates all of these automatically.
Why can't my AVIF be opened? ("Conversion failed")
Your browser can't decode AVIF. Support requires Chrome/Edge 85+, Firefox 93+ or Safari 16+ — older Safari (15 and below) and outdated webviews fail. Nothing is wrong with your file; open it in a current browser, or convert a WebP/JPG/PNG/SVG source instead. AVIF compatibility is a moving target, which is why this page tells you the truth instead of returning a broken icon.
Can an animated AVIF be converted?
ICO is a static format, so the first frame is used. If you need an animated favicon, browsers no longer support animated favicons anyway — a static, high-contrast icon is the right choice.
Does converting reduce image quality?
Your AVIF was already compressed with lossy AV1 encoding, so quality was decided when the file was made. This converter stores the decoded pixels as lossless PNG inside the ICO — no additional loss happens here. With "High" or "Balanced", resampling may soften edges when scaling down. For small icons use Lossless + a large source image.
Is AVIF a good format for favicons?
No — favicons are delivered as ICO or PNG, so AVIF's compression advantage (great for large photos on the web) never comes into play at 16–256px icon sizes. The real question is compatibility: AVIF still fails to decode in older Safari. For a favicon that must work everywhere, a WebP/JPG/PNG/SVG source converted to ICO is the safer path.
Does AVIF to ICO keep transparency?
Yes. AVIF supports a full alpha channel, and the converter keeps it when rasterizing to ICO — so a transparent AVIF becomes a transparent .ico. This is one place AVIF beats JPG, which has no transparency. For the sharpest result on dark browser tabs, keep transparent padding around the artwork and avoid a filled background; the Favicon-set mode stores 32-bit PNG frames inside the .ico that retain the alpha.
